By Mr Brian, Primary Maths Coordinator
Mathematics plays a crucial role in our daily lives, from problem-solving to understanding the world around us. At LANNA, we recognise the importance of building a strong mathematical foundation for our students, and that鈥檚 why we recently held an informative session to engage with parents about our approach to teaching mathematics in the Primary department.
Why Mathematics Matters
Mathematics isn鈥檛 just about numbers; it equips students with essential problem-solving and critical thinking skills. From reading weather forecasts to managing personal finances, maths helps us navigate life鈥檚 complexities. At LANNA, we focus on preparing students for a world that increasingly relies on data, technology, and innovation.
How LANNA Stands Out
Data from our most recent 黑料不打烊 Schools鈥 Assessment (ISA) shows that LANNA students outperform many of their peers globally. While we are proud of our results, there鈥檚 always room for improvement!
A Unique Approach to Teaching: CPA
LANNA follows the Cambridge Primary Mathematics Curriculum, but what truly sets us apart is our use of the CPA (Concrete, Pictorial, Abstract) approach. This method ensures that students first understand mathematical concepts through hands-on experiences before transitioning to pictures and eventually abstract symbols like numbers and equations. It鈥檚 a structured and highly effective way to build a deep understanding of mathematics.
Supporting Every Learner: Gradual Release of Responsibility
At LANNA, we believe in empowering students through a structured teaching model:
- I do it: Teachers model new concepts.
- We do it: Teachers and students work through examples together.
- You do it: Students practise independently, with support available as needed.
This step-by-step approach ensures that students are guided to success while developing confidence in their abilities.
No Textbooks?!
Parents may wonder why textbooks are absent from the classroom. Simply put, our data indicates that our current methods are working. With the help of the Abacus scheme of work and other resources we鈥檝e carefully developed, we ensure students have all they need to succeed.
Tackling Mathematics Anxiety
It鈥檚 common for students to feel anxious about maths, but we take deliberate steps to create a positive and supportive learning environment. Mistakes are part of the learning process, and using real-world examples helps students understand the importance of what they鈥檙e learning. By breaking down tasks into manageable steps, we ensure that students feel confident and capable.
The Role of Technology
In today鈥檚 tech-driven world, there are countless apps and platforms that can help students practise independently, both in the classroom and at home. At LANNA, we make use of these tools to support mathematical learning and keep students engaged.
Celebrating Success: Competitions & Events
We love celebrating our students鈥 achievements in mathematics! Competitions such as the Kangaroo Math Challenge and TTRS 鈥淩est of the World Rocks鈥 encourage students to hone their skills in fun, competitive environments. Additionally, our Pi Week festivities bring maths to life with a hands-on approach, making it both enjoyable and educational.
How Parents Can Help at Home
Parents play a key role in supporting their child鈥檚 mathematical development. Here are some simple ways you can help at home:
- Encourage your child to memorise their times tables.
- Use real-world objects, like toothpicks or coins, to make maths concepts tangible.
- Integrate maths into daily activities, such as shopping or cooking.
- Focus on effort rather than results and celebrate their hard work.
- Explore online resources together and practise mental maths.
By fostering a love of mathematics, both at school and at home, we can help every child at LANNA reach their full potential.
